 What inspired you to enter the photography industry?

When Iretired from teaching, I regained my passion for taking photographs and started turning some of my photographs into photo cards. Giving them as gifts to friends, I received many compliments and was encouraged to try to sell them locally. What started in one shop has now grown to over 20 places on Martha’s Vineyard. As an educator, I had no business experience, but I took on the challenge of following this idea and to see where it would go.

What sets Barbara Reynolds Photography apart from other photography companies?

One thing that distinguishes me from other photographers is that my cards are not printed. I order the photographs that are taped on the cardstock. Each card is signed by the place it was shot or the kind of flower. They are 5x7 and are perfect for framing or using as a note card. Since this is my “retirement project”, I don’t have the pressure of making a certain amount of money. This provides more time to learn more about photography and to make sure I get outside and take photos.

Is there a unique story or inspiration behind some of your photographs?

At the beginning I would take pictures of everything I saw. Now I look for something more unique that I don’t already have. I love to take close ups of flowers and I have customers who love flowers. I also love walking around the various towns of the vineyard and trying to capture the beauty. The one element I love about what I do is that I am always looking for something beautiful.

What is the mission or core values of Barbara Reynolds Photography and how do you incorporate them in your business?

How do you incorporate these values into your photography and business practices? Through my photography, I have been able to give back to my community. A portion of every card I sell is donated to The Red Stocking Fund of Martha’s Vineyard. This fund provides clothing and toys to needy island children. I also donate boxes of cards and framed photographs to Featherstone Center of the Arts, Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard, MV Hospital, and Island Autism.

Can you share a motto, mantra, or philosophy that guides your photography business or personal life?

Take small steps, ask for help along the way, and be true to your values.

What advice would you give someone new to the photography industry or entrepreneurship in general?

There are so many aspects of the Photography business. Be true to your values and ask for help. Take risks. There are so many aspects to a small business that I had to learn. I have learned from so many people, and, in turn, I try to help others.

Reflecting on your career, what has been the most rewarding moment or achievement?

The idea that I have stayed in this business for 12 years surprises me. It gives me such when people I know tell me that they buy my cards. And it is wonderful when someone I don’t know reaches out and wants to buy more cards. Being a part of Martha’s Vineyard Baskets has been another highlight.
